Foster/Adoption Certification & Tucker's Injury

I received a call yesterday from our home study social worker stating we are officially now approved by the county and state as foster/adoption parents for our county!  It has been a long time coming since we started the process in January.  Piles of paperwork, physicals, endless classes, and having every tiny thing in our lives scrutinized and assessed we have been given two thumbs up and were approved!

So where does this leave us know?  Well if we wanted we could immediately have our home study submitted on adoptable available children that match what we are open to.  We could submit our home study and possibly be matched with a waiting child or children needing a forever permanent family and start the adoption process.  I will never say never, however our intentions of this whole thing was to foster with the openness to adoption if a child in our care becomes available and everything falls into the right place.  Right now we are in another waiting pattern as we need that one last class for CPR/First Aid certification and the legality and rules and regulations they go over.  That class is tentatively September 21st so we are looking at almost two months until we can take that class.  Once that class is over and we walk out having passed, we will then be considered an opened home and can start receiving calls for prospective placements.  We are approved and licensed but we can't open until we have that last class and I did ask and was told we could not go to a different county for it as this class is specific to our county and required to be taken here.  So great news but yet again more waiting....we seem to be getting use to all this waiting!

Yesterday also brought about some more excitement.  I had been out all day and came home and let my dogs out to run for a bit.  They were in our fenced in backyard for about 20 minutes before I brought them in.  Nothing seemed out of the usual.  I sat down on the couch and Tucker cuddled right up to me.  Wasn't until about ten minutes later that he flipped over and I saw this giant open bloody wound!  I could not believe it as he didn't seemed bothered by it one bit.  I called our vet immediately to find out they were done for the day, well great timing!  Ended up calling my mom to go with me to the emergency 24 hour vet which is always sure to cost a pretty little penny!

What we think happened is that we have baby bunnies and a mama bunny under our shed.  Warrior Tucker has been bunny hunting and trying to dig under the shed to get to them.  We think he got under the shed but then got stuck by his shoulders so pulled himself out and caught his side on something.  He had a few other spots with open wounds but they were all about the size of a pencil and didn't warrant anything special.  He also has a scratch on his right eyebrow likely from mama bunny as a war wound.

We were told he would likely need to be put under anesthesia for the procedure but that if he is really good they may be able just to shave the area and put local anesthetic and do the procedure with two people holding him.  Sight hounds are known to have problems with anesthesia so we were hoping he wouldn't need to be put under.  My mom and I left to go to dinner and we returned after to be told he was very well behaved and they were able to do the procedure without putting him under!  They stitched him right up and sent us home with 14 days of antibiotics and told to return to have the stitches removed in 14 days.

He came home and has yet to show that he is any type of pain or that it's bothering him.  I have to put him out on a leash so he can't run around.  Last night before bed I decided just to let him loose thinking he'd potty and come right in.  Nope, where did he go right away?  Right to the shed and try to crawl under....talk about a determined pup!  For preventative reasons when I am not home to redirect him from licking he chills in his sweater to take away the temptation to lick.  They tried an Elizabeth collar on him but the small one that fits his neck his snout is longer than it so he can turn and lick if he wanted, but the larger one they tried to send him home in was ridiculously large and didn't his neck and was so heavy he couldn't even lift his head to walk.  We ended up ditching the collar and deciding a sweater would be better.  Of course this would happen when Brian has been out of town, always something exciting going on here!
